Phantasy Star Portable is a 2009 role-playing game developed by Sonic Team for the PlayStation Portable, marking the franchise's first handheld release in North America. Set in the Gurhal system, the game takes place between the events of Phantasy Star Universe and its expansion, Ambition of the Illuminus. The story follows a new character named Vivienne as she investigates a region left contaminated in the aftermath of the apparent elimination of the alien SEED threat. Players begin by constructing a custom avatar from a range of options before venturing through the game's missions, encountering new characters and gathering an inventory of more than 150 collectible items. Beyond the single-player campaign, the game supports wireless cooperative multiplayer for up to four players, allowing groups to explore and engage in combat together.
