Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando is an action platformer developed by Insomniac Games for PlayStation 2, released in 2003 as the second entry in the Ratchet & Clank series. The game casts the duo as mercenaries-for-hire and introduces a substantially expanded arsenal of 18 new weapons alongside five carried over from the original game, the latter accessible to players who load a previous save file. A new experience-based progression system allows weapons to grow more powerful through repeated use, eventually transforming into upgraded forms. Beyond the main story missions, the game includes Maxi-games — supplementary challenge modes where players can test their abilities and earn additional experience. The combination of platforming, combat variety, and weapon progression builds meaningfully on the foundation of its predecessor.
Having defeated Chairman Drek in their last intergalactic adventure, Ratchet and Clank find themselves returning to a more sedate lifestyle. That is, until they are approached by Abercrombie Fizzwidget, the CRO of Megacorp, who needs the duo to track down the company’s most promising experimental project, which has been stolen by a mysterious masked figure. Initially, the mission seemed like a Sunday stroll in the park, but we soon find our heroes entangled in a colossal struggle for control of the galaxy. Along the way, the duo unleashes some of the coolest weapons and gadgets ever invented upon the most dangerous foes they have ever faced. Ratchet and Clanks set out to destroy anything and anyone who stands in their way of discovering the secrets that lie behind “The Experiment.”
