Silent Hill: Book of Memories is an action role-playing spin-off developed by WayForward, released in 2012 exclusively for the PlayStation Vita. Departing significantly from the survival horror roots of the mainline Silent Hill series, the game centers on dungeon-crawling and cooperative multiplayer, allowing multiple players to explore the series' iconic Otherworld environments together. Across a series of Nightmare stages, players solve puzzles, battle creatures, and piece together the mystery surrounding the titular Book of Memories. While traditional series elements such as scare rooms, scarce resources, and a dark atmosphere are retained, the overall design prioritizes action and progression mechanics suited to handheld play on the Vita's hardware. The cooperative structure and hack-and-slash gameplay make it a notable structural departure within the franchise.
The protagonist receives a strange book on his birthday from an unknown sender in Silent Hill. All of his memories are written there, and by altering the book, he finds that he can alter past events in his life. Before the changes take effect though, the character falls asleep and must survive a nightmare, explore the Otherworld and battle creatures from previous Silent Hill games on the way.
