Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is a 2009 adventure game developed by Climax Studios, released for Wii, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable. The seventh entry in the Silent Hill series, it functions as a standalone reimagining of the original game rather than a direct continuation, following Harry Mason as he searches a haunted town for his missing daughter Cheryl. Exploration yields objects and recordings that flesh out Silent Hill's history, while the series' trademark alternate dimension is recast here as a frozen, icy landscape. Unlike earlier entries, the game removes combat entirely — when monsters appear, Harry can only flee. Interspersed throughout are sessions in a psychiatrist's office, where the player answers personal questions about Harry. The game uses these responses to dynamically adjust characters, dialogue, and situations, tailoring the experience toward what it calculates will feel most unsettling to each individual player.
The story follows Harry Mason, who wakes up after a car accident to find that his daughter Cheryl is missing. Harry will wander the snowy streets of Silent Hill searching for answers of her disappearance, but when the world freezes over, he will need to escape the lumbering demons that haunt his steps. Harry will need to navigate both worlds to discover the truth; not just about his missing daughter, but also the type of person he actually is.
