Silent Hill: Origins is a survival horror prequel developed by Climax LA and released in 2007 for PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2, forming the fifth entry in the Silent Hill series. Players control a protagonist who navigates between the real and nightmarish versions of the town, collecting items to solve puzzles and unlock new areas. Combat options include bare-fisted fighting, throwable one-shot items, firearms, and melee weapons — the latter a notable departure from earlier entries, as they degrade and eventually break with use. Enemies follow the series' established tradition of presenting grotesquely distorted human forms. The interface forgoes a traditional HUD, instead signaling low health through reddening screen edges. The game maintains the alternating-world structure familiar to the franchise while introducing its own mechanics and establishing the backstory preceding the events of the original Silent Hill.
Silent Hill: Origins takes place several years before the events of the first game. Travis Grady, a trucker who suffers from visions that are somehow familiar to him, is running late for a delivery one night. He decides to make up for lost time by taking a detour through Silent Hill on his way to Brahms. On the outskirts of Silent Hill, a cloaked figure darts into the road in front of him. Travis slams on the brakes and exits his truck to check on their condition, without know where he is putting himself.
