The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, developed by Nintendo EAD Software Development Group No.3 and released in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube, is a puzzle-adventure game and the first entry in the Zelda series to use cel-shading, a rendering technique that gives the world a distinctly cartoon-like visual style. The game follows the action-adventure and puzzle-solving structure established by earlier entries in the franchise, with core mechanics drawing from those introduced in Ocarina of Time. Its most significant departure is a vast ocean setting called the Great Sea, which players traverse aboard a boat known as the King of Red Lions. Exploration of this expansive waterway forms a central part of the experience, alongside the dungeon-crawling, combat, and light role-playing elements that characterize the broader series. It was the first Zelda title released on the GameCube platform.
Set hundreds of years after the events of Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker finds the hero Link living with his grandmother on the Outset Island, one of the many small islands lost amidst the waters of the Great Sea. On his tenth birthday, Link encounters a giant bird carrying a girl. He rescues the girl, but as a result his own sister is taken away by the bird. The girl is a pirate captain named Tetra, who agrees to help Link find and rescue his sister. During the course of their journey, the two of them realize that a powerful, legendary evil is active again, and must find a way to stop him.
