Released in 1991 by Konami, The Simpsons Arcade Game is a side-scrolling beat 'em up based on the long-running animated television series. Up to four players can each control a different member of the Simpson family across eight stages set in recognizable Springfield locations, including Downtown Springfield, Krustyland, Moe's Tavern, Springfield Gorge, and the Power Plant. Each character has a distinct attack style: Homer punches and kicks, Marge swings a vacuum cleaner, Bart uses his skateboard, and Lisa wields a jump rope as a whip. Scattered weapons such as hammers and bowling balls supplement the combat. Every stage concludes with a boss encounter that becomes faster and more aggressive after absorbing sufficient damage. Between stages, players compete in one of two brief mini-games — inflating a balloon or rousing a sleeping character — to determine who advances first. The game was originally released in arcades and later ported to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, DOS, and Commodore C64/128.
Waylon Smithers has just stolen a diamond from Springfield Jewelers for Mr. Burns. While trying to make a getaway, he crashes into Homer, which knocks the diamond out of his hand. Maggie catches it in her mouth, prompting Smithers to grab her and run off. The Simpsons decide to go after him, but Mr. Burns has tons of henchmen, who want to prevent the family getting their daughter back.
