A role-playing game developed by LEVEL-5 for the Nintendo 3DS, Yo-kai Watch follows a young boy who acquires a mysterious watch granting him the ability to perceive, befriend, and eventually summon supernatural beings known as Yo-kai. These spirits take a wide variety of forms, ranging from everyday inanimate objects to creatures drawn from mythology. Gameplay involves building relationships with Yo-kai companions and calling on them in battles against hostile spirits. Beyond combat, players assist townspeople and other characters in resolving ordinary life problems that Yo-kai mischief has caused. The puzzle and RPG elements are woven around this cycle of exploration, collection, and creature-based combat. Released in Japan in 2013, the game established the foundation for a broader franchise built around its cast of eccentric supernatural characters.
