Blitz: The League is an American football video game developed by Midway Games and released in October 2005 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. It emerged as an unlicensed continuation of the NFL Blitz series following the NFL's exclusive licensing agreement with Electronic Arts. The game earned an M rating from the ESRB — the first in the Blitz series to do so — on account of graphic violence, explicit language, and depictions of drug use. Former NFL linebacker Lawrence Taylor contributed voice acting and served as the game's spokesman. A subsequent version released on Xbox 360 in late 2006 incorporated the voice work and likeness of former pro linebacker Bill Romanowski. The game's drug-related content drew regulatory scrutiny in Australia, where it was refused classification and effectively banned. A Wii version had been planned as a launch title for that platform but was ultimately canceled.
