Mario Kart DS is an arcade racing game developed by Nintendo EAD Software Development Group No.1, released in 2005 for the Nintendo DS and later available on Wii U. As an entry in the long-running Mario Kart series — which originated on the Super Nintendo — it offers 32 tracks divided equally between new Nitro Grand Prix courses and Retro Grand Prix tracks drawn from the previous four games. Eight racers are available from the start, each with a choice of two karts, with additional characters and vehicles unlockable through play. The item roster introduces new pickups alongside series staples, including the Blooper, a squid that sprays ink across opponents' screens, and the Bullet Bill, which transforms the racer into a large, fast-moving projectile that navigates the track autonomously for a limited time.
