Mario Super Sluggers is an arcade-style baseball game developed by NOW Production and released for the Wii in 2008, later available on Wii U. A sequel to Mario Superstar Baseball, it is set in the Baseball Kingdom, where a gathering of Mario characters is disrupted by Bowser. The game offers several modes: Exhibition allows one-off matches with customizable settings, including inning count, star power usage, and error items that can be thrown at fielders. Challenge mode tasks players with building a roster around Mario by completing specific objectives across overhead-perspective areas, each tied to a team captain with a unique ability; coins collected throughout can be spent on helpful items. Toy Field mode, a point-scoring batting competition returning from the previous game, adds a new wrinkle — fielders can now attack one another to steal the ball, and batters can throw items to disrupt them.
The story takes place in the challenge mode of the game. Mario and friends travel to Baseball Kingdom for some relaxation and to play some baseball, when Bowser Jr. suddenly appears and throws the island into chaos. Mario must travel around the island and through each of the unique and specialized areas in order to recruit different characters and captains to challenge Bowser Jr. to a game of baseball. Once Bowser Jr. has been defeated, he retreats, but then Bowser appears to challenge Mario's team and take over the island. Upon defeating Bowser, Mario's team all celebrate and throw a huge party. Bowser and Jr. are invited to the party as well and Bowser ends up saving Mario from one of Wario's and Waluigi's tricks.
