Released in 2001 for PlayStation 2, Silent Hill 2 is a third-person psychological survival horror game developed by Team Silent and the second installment in the Silent Hill franchise. The game follows James Sunderland, a man who receives a letter apparently written by his wife Mary — despite her having died three years prior. Drawn by its contents to the perpetually fog-shrouded town of Silent Hill, James finds himself among several other troubled individuals, each haunted by their own pasts. Gameplay centers on a combination of combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving as James navigates the town's oppressive environments. The title places particular weight on its narrative, using psychological horror to examine themes of grief, guilt, and memory rather than relying primarily on action or conventional horror set pieces.
James Sunderland has arrived in the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife Mary, telling him to meet her in their special place in Silent Hill. However his wife died three years ago, and has kept the secrets surrounding her death. James decides to honor the letter's request, wondering if this is a sick joke or if there is more to this. As he reaches the outskirts of the town, James finds that the road is blocked, and parks at an abandoned restroom. Little does he realize that this is the first step forward into the mystery of Silent Hill and his own past.
