Released in 1991 for the Super Famicom and Super Nintendo Entertainment System, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a puzzle-adventure game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development. Set in the kingdom of Hyrule during an age of magic, the game follows ancestors of the series' iconic characters as a malevolent magician seizes control of the land and unleashes monsters across the realm. Gameplay involves navigating dungeons, palaces, mazes, and forests while combating enemies using swords, magical weapons, and environmental objects such as boulders. Water traversal is also possible, allowing players to swim through rivers. Progression depends on learning spells, collecting magical artifacts, and unraveling the mysteries surrounding the antagonist and a hidden realm connected to Hyrule. The game later became available on Satellaview, Wii, Wii U, and New Nintendo 3DS through various re-release efforts.
The wizard Agahnim has been abducting descendants of the seven sages, intent on using their power to obliterate the barrier leading to the Dark World. One of the descendants happens to be Princess Zelda, who informs Link of her plight. Armed with a trusty sword and shield, Link begins a journey that will take him through treacherous territory.
