Donkey Kong is a platform-puzzle game developed by Pax Softonica, released in 1994 for the Game Boy and later made available on the Nintendo 3DS. The game opens with a faithful recreation of the original arcade stages, but these serve as an introduction to a substantially larger adventure comprising 96 levels spread across 12 worlds. These later stages are considerably more elaborate than the arcade originals, incorporating scrolling backgrounds, collectible objects, enemies to navigate around, and recurring boss encounters against Donkey Kong himself. The design blends arcade action with more deliberate puzzle-platforming challenges. When played through the Super Game Boy accessory, the experience is enhanced with colorized visuals, digitized speech, and an improved musical score that draws on the SNES sound hardware, giving the game a notably richer presentation than the standard Game Boy version offers.
The large ape Donkey Kong kidnaps Mario's lady friend Pauline and carries her off to a construction site. In a repeat of the 1981 arcade classic, Mario follows him up to the highest point and makes Donkey Kong fall off the platforms by pulling out the rivets supporting them, causing Donkey Kong to fall a height of 100m, reuniting Mario and Pauline, just like the events that took place 13 years ago. However, Donkey Kong unexpectedly recovers, takes Pauline, and escapes with her into the Big-City. Mario pursues the two.
