Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a side-scrolling platformer developed by Retro Studios for the Wii U, released in 2014. The game follows Donkey Kong and his companions as they travel across five islands to reclaim Donkey Kong Island, navigating stages that range from underwater sections to frozen landscapes. Returning series staples include mine cart sequences and barrel-blasting traversal, supplemented by new gameplay mechanics. Four characters are playable in total: Donkey Kong serves as the central protagonist, while Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and Cranky Kong — making his first playable appearance in the series — are each available as partner characters. Dixie and Cranky bring distinct abilities to the game, with Cranky notably using his cane to bounce off surfaces. Any of the three partners can team up with Donkey Kong, offering meaningfully different approaches to the same stages.
