Killzone is a science fiction first-person shooter developed by Guerrilla Games and released for PlayStation 2 in 2004. The game centers on a military conflict in which players can take control of four distinct protagonists, each carrying their own particular strengths and weaknesses that shape how the game is approached. A notable multiplayer component allowed up to sixteen players to compete across eight maps and six modes, including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Assault, Defend and Destroy, Supply Drop, and Domination. The online servers have since been shut down, making this mode no longer accessible. Killzone was among the earlier console shooters to offer a roster of selectable characters with differentiated abilities alongside a substantial online suite, establishing the groundwork for the long-running franchise that followed.
During the era of space exploration, a faction of humans colonized the planet Helghan. In order to survive in the harsh environment, these people mutated to the point of no longer remaining human. They developed a passionate hatred for mankind, and eventually formed the Helghast Empire, attacking the planet Vekta controlled by the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance (ISA). As Helghast soldiers invade the planet's perimeter, the ISA forces are trying to hold the ground and find a way to stop them.
