Killzone: Mercenary is a first-person shooter developed by Guerrilla Cambridge, released in 2013 exclusively for PlayStation Vita and the second handheld entry in the Killzone series. Unlike previous installments in the franchise, the campaign places players in the role of a mercenary who takes contracts from both ISA specialists and Helghast forces, tackling assignments beyond the scope of conventional soldiers. Completing contracts successfully earns in-game currency, which can be invested in customizing tactics and loadouts to suit different approaches. The game makes deliberate use of the Vita's hardware, incorporating both the touchscreen and the rear touch panel into its mechanics. This flexibility in allegiance and combat style distinguishes it from earlier entries in the series, which were more rigidly aligned with one faction throughout their campaigns.
Starting just after the ending of the original Killzone, and revisiting many of the events from the Killzone trilogy, the game puts players in the rugged combat boots of a mercenary named Arran Danner. Danner, a former UCA soldier, has no qualms about taking on paid contracts from the ISA, as well as the Helghast.
