Rock Band 2 is a music rhythm game developed by Harmonix Music Systems, released in 2008 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii. A direct follow-up to the original Rock Band, it supports up to four players performing simultaneously on lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, and vocals. Gameplay centers on matching on-screen note patterns with the appropriate instrument peripherals, while the vocalist must align with the correct pitch against scrolling lyrics. The game introduced revised guitar and drum controllers, though older peripherals from the first game remain compatible. The updated guitar controller, modeled after the Fender Stratocaster, features five additional fret buttons positioned near the neck to facilitate rapid fingertapping passages, along with an effect switch offering five selectable sound effects. Rock Band 2 was a direct competitor to Guitar Hero: World Tour, which launched around the same period with a comparable band-play format.
