Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is a skateboarding sports game developed by Neversoft Entertainment and released in 2002 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, PC, and Mac. The game departs from earlier entries in the series by removing the timer-based structure, instead placing skaters in expansive free-roaming levels where 190 goals of escalating difficulty can be tackled at the player's own pace. Progress is gated by a Pro Challenge system, which determines when a skater is ready to compete at the professional level, effectively introducing a second tier of competition. The game expands the trick repertoire beyond previous installments and supports an online multiplayer mode accommodating up to eight players simultaneously. Tony Hawk and other professional skaters appear throughout, issuing challenges that drive progression across the various environments.
