Yoshi's Island DS is a 2D platformer developed by Nintendo, released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS and later made available on Wii U. A sequel to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the game follows Yoshi as he works to rescue babies kidnapped by Kamek and the Toadies, who are searching for seven star children — infants with powerful stars in their hearts. The core gameplay closely echoes its predecessor in mechanics, visual style, and themes, but distinguishes itself in two key ways. First, the Nintendo DS's dual screens are used to extend the display of each level vertically. Second, rather than carrying only Baby Mario, Yoshi can carry several different babies, each granting a unique ability that is necessary for progressing through specific stages. These baby-swapping mechanics give the game its primary layer of strategic variety.
A mysterious floating island has suddenly appeared over peaceful Yoshi's Island. Soon after its arrival, a gaggle of kids vanishes from the island school. Thankfully, Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong and Baby Wario manage to avoid being kidnapped. Now, Yoshi and the four young superstars must set out on a wild and colorful quest to rescue the kids and investigate the ominous island hovering overhead.
