Fire Emblem Awakening is a tactical role-playing game developed by Nintendo SPD Production Group No. 2, released in 2012 for the Nintendo 3DS. Set against a backdrop of escalating continental conflict, the game follows Chrom and his forces — a diverse roster of knights, mages, archers, and other unit types — as they contend with opposing kingdoms, empires, and undead armies. Combat takes place on grid-based battlefields where players position troops, select weapons, and execute attacks turn by turn. Two notable mechanics, Pair Up and Dual, allow adjacent units to combine their efforts in battle, with repeated cooperation gradually strengthening both individual skills and the bonds between characters. The interplay between tactical positioning and relationship development gives the game a distinctive dual focus, making unit management as meaningful outside of combat as it is during engagements.
