Metroid Prime is a first-person action-adventure game developed by Retro Studios and released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002, marking the Metroid series' debut in three dimensions. Set after the events of the original 1986 Metroid, the game follows bounty hunter Samus Aran as she investigates a Space Pirate frigate before pursuing the antagonist Ridley to Tallon IV, a sprawling planet teeming with hostile wildlife and the ruins of an ancient, technologically advanced civilization known as the Chozo. Gameplay emphasizes exploration and environmental navigation in a manner consistent with the broader Metroidvania tradition, layering first-person shooting combat over the series' hallmark structure of interconnected areas and gradually unlocked abilities.
