Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo and released in 2008 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, is a football simulation title and the direct sequel to Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. Following significant criticism of its predecessor, series creator Shingo Takatsuka undertook a comprehensive overhaul of the game before release. The title introduces several notable additions and refinements. A new Become a Legend mode allows players to create a custom footballer and guide that character through a professional career. The longstanding Master League mode was updated with a two-tier negotiation system, separating club and player negotiations into distinct stages. Edit Mode received improvements, and online network play was enhanced to reduce the lag issues that had affected PES 2008. Lionel Messi serves as the primary cover athlete, with Andrés Guardado appearing on certain regional versions. PES 2009 was succeeded by Pro Evolution Soccer 2010.
